3 METHODS TO PREVENT STRINGY BARK BUILDUP
It’s that time of year again. Temperatures are rising and the sap is starting to flow. Which also means we’re starting to see more stringy bark coming through the sawmills, causing a mess, downtime and a lot more maintenance if we’re not set up for it properly.
To help mitigate these issues, we offer a range of different options including scoring tips, t-style arms and pizza cutter arms:
Scoring Tips
Scoring tips can be very effective as a first line of defense to break up stringy bark before it travels further, getting hung up in the arm. Depending on the tip you’re running and the conditions you’re facing, a great solution is to add extra cutting pieces to make the most of the surface area of the tip to cut up the bark. Many of our customers have seen great results with this option.
T-Style Arms
Though plate arms are often preferred due to their lightweight nature, T-Style arms tend to run a lot smoother in stringy bark conditions. If every spring you’re facing major stringy bark issues and plugging, even with the use of scoring tips and bark breakers, a great option is to have a spare set of T-Style arms to run in the spring. The smaller area between the hub and arm catches less bark, preventing build-up. It may seem like an unneeded extra cost to stock spare arms but in the long run, the decrease in down time and dealing with severe plugging issues is well worth it.
Pizza Cutter Arms
Pizza cutter arms are a great option if your machine has the the ability to run at a slower/variable speeds. We offer pizza cutter arms for both VK and Nicholson debarking machines.
